A compendium of WHO IS WHO IN ENUGU STATE
Monday, September 1, 2008
FONA COMMUNICATIONS (with the cooperation of Office of the Special Adviser to Enugu State Governor on Media, prominent personalities of Enugu State, and notable organizations) is packaging a compendium of “Who is Who” in Enugu State. The compendium will chronicle foundational and historical personalities of Enugu State, historical and cultural events, and unique features that stand out in the midst of others.
According to Thomas Carlyle, "The history of the world is but the biography of great men." And women, I must quickly add. One of the articles of FONA Communications' mission is "To present biographies of eminent sons and daughters of Enugu state who have excelled or carved a niche for themselves with the time and space have allotted them by nature." This translates to writing the history of Enugu State as it unfolds... something we all miss today, 100 years after Enugu was founded on the foothills of Udi Hills.
Do not be shy about your accomplishments. If it is about cost, we can arrange share pages, if only to make sure the pride of Enugu State diaspora is showcased in FULL color. Before we offload our usual criticisms, the opportunity still beckons.
According to Hon. Austin Nweke Executive Director, FONA Communications: “It is a truism that every human society has a beginning and foundation. Similarly, each given society, even as it evolves, has its foundational and historical personalities, events as well as unique features which stand it out in the midst of others. Histories of societies are chronicled on these salient facts. A ready document on them enables subsequent generations to keep faith with the collective goals and aspirations. It is also a beacon which directs the ship of society aright. The absence of such a reference book is fatal to a society. There will be deviations, corruption of societal vision and ideals as well as loss of individual and group identity.”
It is no wonder we often complain of lack of historical documentation. We complain because generations before did not document events as they unfolded, our history. Many of our brethren look lost when told of the prominence of Enugu State in fields of human endeavors: first Igbo medical doctor, first African world court judge, first African student at Eton, first pilot, first airfield, first mass education project, first Nigerian university, first state university, four supreme court justices and counting, best vice chancellor in Africa, busiest motor vehicular junction, best brains in engineering and medicine, largest brewery in Africa, first African world-class pageant beauty, first law school east of the Niger, etc. We cannot afford not to pass on these accomplishments to future generations because they are unique batons of history that guide social development and progress.
